Blue Explorers Dive Resort, Puerto de Mogan,

Gran Canaria

Blue Explorers Dive Resort make a living from the ocean, and the core ethics of their business centre on protecting it.  Having found an opportunity to venture into the accommodation sector to create the first dive hotel in Gran Canaria, they want to lead by example and provide their guests with every possible opportunity to avoid single use plastic.

Making it easy for guests to support a move to zero waste and zero single use plastic could be a daunting task but it’s one the owners seem to relish and their enthusiasm is contagious.

Stay, Eat, Dive, Reduce Single Use Plastic

Amongst other things, the bar and restaurant will not be offering plastic cups or straws and will be incentivizing guests to re-fill their own re-usable bottles from dispensers and eventually through a water filter system which they’re hoping to install.  A gorgeous branded Chilly’s water bottle will be for sale for those that prefer not to re-use plastic.  Knowing that there is the potential for guests to come onto the resort with plastic bags, they’ll be encouraging their re-use and will ensure that any bags no longer fit for purpose will be properly recycled.

In the restaurant, the chefs will be making their own ketchup meaning that they won’t need to buy these in plastic bottles and the guests actually get a super tasty, fresh alternative.

There will be absolutely no miniature toiletries in any of the bathrooms and innovative communications throughout the complex will raise awareness with guests, many of whom will be from the dive community and will hopefully spread the message even further when they return home and travel to other places.

In addition to what the guests see, the management team has to work hard behind the scenes.  There is currently only one recycling bin at the opposite end of the road to where the hotel is situated making separation and collection difficult but they’re determined to overcome this temporary hurdle and until such time as the infrastructure is in place, they’ll go out of the way to take guest’s recycling themselves.

We know we can’t do everything all in one go, we need to spend time convincing some of our suppliers that we want to do things differently, but we’re certainly going to keep moving forwards to make this difference.
